January 31, 2005:

Palestinian terrorists fire at IDF forces operating in Nablus (West Bank). No injuries are reported. Palestinians also fire mortars at the Israeli communities of Nvei Dekalim, Gadid, and Netzer Hazani (Gaza Strip), causing serious damage to a home. No injuries are reported. A Qassam rocket is fired at the Israeli community of Nvei Dekalim.

In addition, Palestinian terrorists hurl an explosive device at an IDF patrol near Rachel's Tomb (West Bank), lightly wounding a soldier. Palestinians also fire at the Israeli community of Kadim (West Bank), and hurl a firebomb at an Israeli bus traveling in Gush Etzion (West Bank).

IDF forces identify a Palestinian terrorist approaching a military position near the Philadelphi route. IDF forces fire and wound the terrorist. No injuries to IDF forces are reported.

January 29, 2005:

Palestinian terrorists fire three mortars at the Israeli community of Netzer Hazani (Gaza Strip), and launch a Qassam rocket towards Sderot. Palestinians also fire at an IDF vehicle near Hebron (West Bank).

January 28, 2005:

Palestinian terrorists fire mortars at the Israeli community of Netzer-Hazani (Gaza Strip).

An Israeli security source tells IMRA that the IDF will not operate in areas of the Gaza Strip where Palestinian security forces have deployed. The security source also noted that the IDF will only act in the West Bank against terror with the approval of the Chief of Staff.

January 27, 2005:

IDF forces arrest 14 suspected Palestinian terrorists in Judea and Samaria (West Bank).

January 26, 2005:

The IDF plans to construct an electronic fence along the Israel-Egypt border to prevent weapons smuggling. However, a budget has yet to be approved for the project.

January 26, 2005:

Middle East Newsline reports that Palestinian terrorists, led by Fatah, have been developing components for the production of car bombs. According to Israeli military sources, the components were designed to enhance car and other bombs.

Hizbullah, the Lebanese based terrorist organization, provided funding and expertise for the production of car bombs.

January 26, 2005:

Palestinian terrorists fire a Qassam rocket at the western Negev. Palestinians also fire at IDF forces in Nablus (West Bank), and launch anti-tank rockets at IDf forces along the Kissufim road (Gaza Strip).

In addition, an IDF soldier is lightly injured by Palestinian sniper fire near the Israeli community of Rafiah Yam (Gaza Strip). Palestinians also fire a mortar at an IDF position near the Israeli community of Nevei Dekalim (Gaza Strip).

January 23, 2005:

Military officials reveal the January 18, 2005 arrest of a senior Hamas terrorist cell in Nablus. The terrorists were preparing to manufacture rockets and shells, as well as to carry out large-scale attacks with explosive devices.

The above-mentioned arrests and subsequent questioning led to the discovery of a Hamas weapons laboratory containing 25 kilograms of improvised explosives material, along with 120 liters of substances used in the manufacture of explosives material, a detonating device for explosive belts, and various electronic components.

A second lab was also discovered, containing instruction manuals for the manufacture of high-quality explosive devices, including those designed for use against armored vehicles. Improvised explosives and bullets were also found in the lab.

January 23, 2005:

Palestinian terrorists fire an anti-tank rocket at an IDF position near the Israeli community of Ganei Tal (Gaza Strip).

Ella Abukasis, 17, from the Israeli city of Sderot, is buried.

Abukasis was mortally wounded by a Qassam rocket as she shielded her younger brother from the incoming projectile.

January 21, 2005:

January 20, 2005:

Palestinian terrorists fire at IDF troops near the Israeli community of Kfar Darom (Gaza Strp). Soldiers return fire.

January 19, 2005:

The Israeli daily, Yediot Acharonot, quotes a defense expert as noting that Palestinians in Gaza have managed to import 20-kilometer-range Egyptian rockets (or parts).

The smuggled 122mm rocket, equipped with a 23kg (50 lbs) warhead, would place Ashkelon's power plan, Netivot, and possibly even Kiryat Gat within range.

January 19, 2005:

Palestinian terrorists fire at the Israeli communities of Nvei Dekalim and Tel Katifa (Gaza Strip). IDF soldiers return fire. Palestinians also fire an anti-tank rocket and a mortar at the Israeli community of Dugit (Gaza Strip). In addition, two IDF soldiers are wounded when terrorists fire an anti-tank rocket at an armored bulldozer operating in northern Gaza.

IDF soldiers also eliminate two terrorists placing explosives along a perimeter fence in the Gaza area.

January 18, 2005:

Palestinian terrorists fire mortars at the Israeli communities of Kfar Darom, Moshav Katif, and Nisanit (Gaza Strip). Palestinians also fire a Qassam rocket at the western Negev.

In addition, a Palestinian suicide bomber attacks an IDF position (Orchan) at the Gush Katif Junction - killing a GSS officer and wounding eight other Israeli security personnel. Hamas has claimed responsibility for the attack.

January 17, 2005:

IDF forces kill two Palestinian terrorists carrying an RPG launcher near the Kissufim route (Gaza Strip).

In addition, Palestinian terrorists fire four Qassam rockets towards the western Negev. Palestinians also fire at IDF soldiers in the Rafiah area of southern Gaza.

Due to the ongoing warfare in the Gaza region, IDF Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Moshe Ya'alon, has ordered the military's Southern Command to prepare a plan for a possible major counter-terrorism offensive in the Strip.

January 16, 2005:

Palestinian terrorists fire Qassam rockets at Or HaNer, Nir Shalom, and Nahal Oz (Negev). Palestinians also fire mortars at the Israeli community of Nvei Dekalim (Gaza Strip).

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon noted that, "The IDF and the security forces have been instructed to step up operational activity against terrorism and they will continue to do so, without restrictions, I emphasize, without restrictions, as long as the Palestinians are not lifting a finger. The political leadership has instructed that any action, that any action, be taken that is necessary to halt terrorism."

January 15, 2005:

Palestinian terrorists fire a mortar at the Israeli community of Netzarim in the Gaza Strip, moderately wounding a seven-year-old Israeli child. Palestinian terrorists also fire a Qassam rocket at Sderot, critically wounding one person. Three other Israelis are wounded in the attack.

The IDF is currently operating in Gaza City. Infantry, backed by tanks and military bulldozers, have moved into Zeitoun with the goal of halting Palestinian attacks against Netzarim.

January 13, 2005:

Six Israeli civilians are killed and five others wounded when Palestinian terrorists open fire and detonate an explosives laden truck at the Karni crossing (northern Gaza Strip). Following the explosion, gun battles errupt between security forces and Palestinian gunmen. Three Palestinian terrorists are reportedly killed in the attack.

The (Fatah) Aksa Martyrs Brigades claims responsibility, as does Hamas and the Popular Resistance Committee.

January 13, 2005:

Palestinian terrorists fire at an IDF armored vehicle near the Israeli community of Nvei Dekalim in the southern Gaza Strip. Palestinians also fire at a military position in the same area. In addition, Palestinian terrorists fire a mortar at the Israeli community of Bedolah, damaging a hothouse.

January 12, 2005:

Palestinian terrorists detonate a roadside bomb under an IDF vehicle in the Israeli community of Morag (Gaza Strip). Simultaneously, a Palestinian terrorist opened fire, killing one Israeli civilian and wounding three others, including an IDF officer.

January 12, 2005:

January 11, 2005:

IDF Homefront Command Colonel Uzi Buchbinder informs the Knesset Environmental Committee that the implementation of the Gaza disengagement plan would place 46 western Negev communities within the range of Qassam rockets launched from northern Gaza.

Buchbinder also noted that the army has been developing a plan that would include the installation of an early warning system and safety glass on school windows.

According to Colonel (res.) Mordechai Yogev of the National Security Forum, "the withdrawal of the Israel Defense Forces from the Gaza Strip and northern Samaria will bring numerous large population centers and communities within the range of Qassam rockets and mortar shells, including Ashkelon in the south and the cities of Beit She'an, Afula, Pardes Hannah and Hadera in the north."

It should be noted that Ashkelon region houses numerous strategic facilities, including three power stations. The Qassam rockets will also threaten the Hadera power station in northern Israel.

January 5, 2005:

Twelve IDF soldiers are wounded in a Palestinian Qassam rocket against an IDF military base near Gaza. In addition, Palestinian terrorists fire Qassam rockets at Sderot and Kibbutz Gevim, and mortars at Tel Katifa.

IDF forces also identified an armed Palestinian terrorist infiltrating the Erez terminal (northern Gaza Strip). The terrorist hurled grenades and fired at an IDF position. IDF forces returned fire, killing the terrorist.

January 4, 2005:

Shin Bet head Avi Dichter informs the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee that an IDF withdrawal from the West Bank would result in the creation of a terrorist infrastructure as wide and effective as in the Gaza Strip. In addition, Dichter stated that an IDF redeployment in Rafah will transform southern Israel into south Lebanon.


Dichter also noted that at least five anti-aircraft rockets are present in the Gaza Strip, and emphasized that the IDF's presence along the Philadelphia Route is crucial to prevent the smuggling of more advanced weaponry.

January 4, 2005:

Palestinian terrorists fire Qassam rockets at Sderot. Palestinians also fire mortars, which land in close proximity to an Israeli schoolbus in the northern Gaza Strip. Two civilians sustain light shrapnel injuries in the mortar attack.
