According to Middle East Newsline, Israel's government has decided to withdraw from the Egyptian border with the Gaza Strip. Officials stated that Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is determined to order an IDF withdrawal from the eight-kilometer Egypt-Gaza border as part of the overall withdrawal from the Gaza Strip. The officials noted that Egypt would deploy a police force of 750 along the Gaza border, which would be supported by helicopters, armored personnel carriers and anti-tank weapons. Officials stated that Egypt would deploy an additional 5,000 troops along the 200-kilometer Israeli-Egyptian border at a later date. IDF and GSS forces capture a senior Islamic Jihad terrorist in Tulkarem, near Netanya. The terrorist, Thamer Hassin Sa'id Gha'er, was involved in numerous attacks over the last six months. Gha'er's Tul Karem cells were involved in a series of suicide bombings, car bombings and shooting attacks, including the February suicide bombing of the Stage nightclub in Tel Aviv and the suicide bombing two weeks ago at a Netanya mall. According to Israeli Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz, the IDF is planning to withdraw from the Philadelphi route along the Gaza-Egypt border in October. The head of the Defense Ministry political-security department, Amos Gilad, is scheduled to convene another round of talks in Egypt. The Ministry is hoping that a successful meeting between Gilad and Egyptian defense officials will lead to an agreement regarding an Egyptian-Israeli deal, whereby 750 Egyptian police officers will be deployed on the western side of the Philadelphi Route. Two Israeli civilians are killed, one civilian is moderately injured and an addditional four are lightly injured when a Palestinian terrorist opens fire in the direction of their car. The incident occurs as the victims are traveling on the road leading towards the Kissufim crossing, near the Mor Bridge, in central Gaza. IDF soldiers return fire - killing the terrorist. During further searches of the area, IDF forces encounter an additional terrorist. A number of grenades are found on the corpse of one the terrorists. Palestinian terrorists fire approximately 40 mortars and Qassam rockets at Israeli communities in Gaza (since Thursday evening, July 14, 2005). Terrorists also fire another 20 rockets that impact inside Israel, including the city of Sderot. Two individuals are lightly injured when mortars slam into a home in the Israeli community of Nevei Dekalim (Gaza Strip). There appears to be significant damage to the home. Early Friday evening, Palestinian terrorists launch an anti-tank rocket at an IDF position near the Egypt-Gaza border. Palestinian Authority police and Hamas operatives engage in gun battles in the Zeitoun neighborhood of Gaza City. Two men believed to be passers-by are reportedly killed and some 25 are wounded. A Palestinian suicide bomber detonates a 10-kilo bomb vest packed with steel nails outside an Israeli shopping mall in Netanya. Five Israelis are killed in the attack and 61 injured. Islamic Jihad claims responsibility for the attack. A Palestinian terrorist also attempts to detonate a truck rigged with explosives inside the Israeli community of Shavei Shomron (Samaria/West Bank). The bomber blew up his pick-up truck and its freight of gas canisters - seriously injuring himself. No other casualties are reported. The bomb pick-up was stolen from Israeli military industries and loaded with gas canisters. Middle East Newsline reports that the Palestinian Authority security services has swollen to nearly 60,000 officers - with only one third of the showing up for work. According to U.S. officials, the PA police and security forces have made little progress towards reform and restructuring during 2005. They noted that the security forces have begun to resemble a social welfare agency for Fatah operatives searching for jobs. White House envoy Lt. Gen. William Ward told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that PA security forces are "dysfunctional" and divided into fiefdoms. According to Ward, two thirds of the 58,000 PA security officers fail to report to work.
