A Palestinian woman arrived at the "Erez" security crossing in the northern Gaza Strip this, wearing knee-long explosive pants rigged with approximately 10 kilograms of explosives. The explosives were concealed underneath two additional layers of clothing. The woman, who was acting in a suspicious manner, was stopped by IDF soldiers after she had entered the Israeli side of the crossing. A security check by IDF soldiers revealed the explosives, which were later detonated in a controlled manner by sappers. The woman was taken for questioning by security forces. Wafaa Samir Ibrahim Bass stated in her questioning that she had been dispatched as a suicide bomber by the Fatah Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade infrastructure based in the northern Gaza Strip. Wafaa was to use her personal medical authorization documents, allowing her to cross through into Israel to receive medical treatment. Wafaa stated that she had been directed to carry out the suicide attack in a crowded Israeli hospital. It should be noted that this bombing attempt joins another in August 2004 where a terrorist was caught at the 'Erez' crossing wearing explosive pants with the intent to carry out a bombing within Israel. In the past week alone, secrity forces have: stopped a cell of 15-16 year old terrorists planning on carrying out attacks in Israel; apprehended a youth with 5 pipe bombs at the Hawara crossing; and uncovered a bomb laboratory in Jenin with over 50 kg of explosive material. Yesterday a Non-Commissioned Officer was killed while doing engineering work along the Israeli-Egyptian border, and this morning an Israeli civilian was murdered by gunfire in the northern West Bank. IDF and ISA forces discover an Islamic Jihad explosives laboratory containing 50 kilograms of explosives. The explosives are detonated in a controlled manner by IDF sappers. Rami Muhammed Hassan Kandil, a 21 year old wanted Islamic Jihad terrorist was arrested during the course of the operation. Kandil, who planned on carrying out a suicide terror attack inside Israel, was previously imprisoned, but later released by Israel as part of a goodwill gesture to the Palestinian Authority. The IDF, in conjunction with the ISA, shuts down a Nablus-based Tanzim terrorist cell in the final stages of executing a suicide terror attack inside Israel. The cell, operatives of which were from the Askar and Balata refugee camps in Nablus, recruited Palestinians as young as fifteen and sixteen to carry out the attack. A number of such individuals were recruited by Tanzim operatives directed by Hizbullah terrorists in Lebanon. Eight Palestinian youths were amongst the operatives detained. The Education Ministry and the IDF Homefront Command continue to prepare for post-disengagement scenarios. An informaiton pamphlet warns of expected shooting and Qassam rocket attacks into areas bordering northern Gaza. Security concerns also include terrorist infiltrations, and tunnels dug from Gaza to enter the Negev area. Some of the instructions in the information pamphlet advise residents to lock their doors and windows. Residents with licensed weapons are encouraged to carry their gun at all times. Certain schools in communities, including Sderot, have already fortified roofs and installed bullet resistant glass. Ha'aretz reports that Islamic Jihad recently fired five rockets at the Israeli communities of Ganim and Kadim from Jenin. However, the rockets exploded in mid-air shortly after being launched - apparently due to a technical failure. Nevertheless, the IDF has expressed concern that such rocket fire will increase after the area (northern Samaria/West Bank) is evacuated as part of the disengagement plan. The IDF's weekly publication, "Bamhane," reports that the military has found a way to block Palestinian smuggling tunnels dug underneath the Gaza-Egypt border via the use of a huge trench-digging machine. The new trenching machine, made U.S. company Trencor Inc., could provide a possible, albeit temporary solution to the smuggling problem by neutralizing tunnels now in operation. Outgoing IDF Chief of Staff Moshe Ya'alon tells Ha'aretz that if Israel does not commit to additional withdrawals, "there will be an eruption ... Terrorist attacks of all types: shooting, bombs, suicide bombers, mortars, Qassam rockets." Ya'alon also noted that without an additional withdrawal, "there is a high probability of a second war of terror." In addition, when asked whether he intended to say that, following the disengagement, Kfar Sava's situation will be like Sderot's today, Ya'alon responded: "And Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, too.
